Hackers are secretive, but they are also social. Many spend their spare time in chat rooms and forums discussing their latest targets, techniques and conquests. Eavesdropping on those conversations offers a fascinating insight into their motives.

Say hacker to someone and they are likely to trot out the usual aged clichés - geek, loner, bedroom-bound teenager.

Philosopher is unlikely to feature high on the list. But it seems the modern-day hacker spends a lot of time contemplating the meaning of life.

"Each has a philosophy and they want to discuss it," says Noa Bar Yosef.

She ought to know. Her job with security firm Imperva involves hanging around in hacker forums trying to work out what motivates them.

It is a murky, idiosyncratic world where Ms Yosef admits she spends far too much time.

In one group she visits, members discuss the best reading matter for would-be thinkers.

"Start with Kierkegaard, then Nietzsche and after you've read Nietzsche, Sartre is the most logical choice".

Another poses a question about the practicalities of hacker life: "what kit would you take with you if you were on the run?"

Often, online conversations get personal.

"If they spend a lot of time discussing philosophy, that is nothing compared to the amount of time they devote to their love life, from tips on how to get a girlfriend to details about the next steps, through to chatting about being dumped," says Ms Bar Yosef.

They are also fond of religion as a topic. One hacker forum conducted a poll to find out the faith of its members.

Christians topped the poll with 29% of forum members claiming it was their religion of choice, 28% said they had no religion, 24% followed Islam, 4% were Hindus and 1.8% professed to be Buddhists.

Literature comes up regularly too.

Hackers spend time swapping tips about their favourite books, with choices ranging from Stephen King and a guidebook entitled 'Galactic Rebellion for Dummies' to the handbook of disenchanted youth, Catcher in the Rye. There is also mention of John Milton's 17th century epic poem Paradise Lost.

And for those seeking movie recommendations, members are always keen to offer their top list of films about - you've guessed it - hacking.

Darker side

Beyond the frivolous, there is serious business being discussed in these forums.

For many, they are akin to university seminars - a place to brainstorm new ideas and update older techniques.

As hacking moves from an interest to a hobby to a vocation, sharing skills becomes increasingly important.

"They are a collaborative community," says Ms Bar Yosef.

"Think of the drug industry. A drug dealer couldn't possibly conduct all these activities alone and likewise an individual hacker finds cyber-accomplices a necessity."

A typical 'cyber mafia', she explains, includes a 'researcher' who hunts for vulnerabilities in systems, a 'farmer' who maintains the botnets (networks of computers taken over by malicious code and controlled externally), a 'dealer' who rents botnets and extracts valuable data from them and a 'crime lord' who finds ways of making money from the stolen information.

Often Ms Bar Yosef will see an upcoming security threat emerging as ideas are knocked around.

She cites the example of Osama bin Laden's killing. Immediately afterwards there was an upsurge in discussions about how to take advantage by creating fake videos of his death loaded with malware.

If the forums are any kind of measure, there is no shortage of recruits to the hacker cause. One popular group frequented by Ms Bar Yosef has 200,000 members.

The chat rooms that she can access tend to be the hacker-lite hangouts. Many of those members will be enthusiastic geeks or sometimes hactivists, keen to score points on corporations with minor website vandalism.

Those more heavily involved in the criminal underground tend to converse in locations that are not publicly accessible.

Making the leap from enthusiastic amateur to becoming part of a gang is alarmingly easy, says Ms Yosef.

Going to the dark side is a four step process, she explains.

"Start lurking in different underground hacking forums. Become an active participant in topics. Bring some 'proof' of what you've said - for example 'I'm posting for free five credentials to Paypal. Want more? Call me up!'. Earn a reputation and you're in."

Such is the level of insight that can be garnered from hacker forums that they regularly come under the watchful eye of law enforcement.

Spanish police this week arrested three suspected members of the Anonymous hacker group. Authorities revealed that they had trawled through more than 2,000,000 lines of log chats and web pages leading up to the arrests.

With the International Monetary Fund, Sony, Google, Lockheed Martin, RSA Security and Citibank just some of the diverse and high profile victims of security breaches in the last month, scrutiny of these electronic hangouts will only increase.

Pasta has topped a global survey of the world's favourite foods. So how did the dish so closely associated with Italy become a staple of so many tables around the globe?

While not everyone knows the difference between farfalle, fettuccine and fusilli, many people have slurped over a bowl of spaghetti bolognese or tucked into a plate of lasagne.

Certainly in British households, spaghetti bolognese has been a regular feature of mealtimes since the 1960s. It's become a staple of children's diets, while a tuna-pasta-sweetcorn concoction can probably be credited with sustaining many students through their years at university.

But now a global survey by the charity Oxfam has named pasta as the world's most popular dish, ahead of meat, rice and pizza. As well as being popular in unsurprising European countries, pasta was one of the favourites in the Philippines, Guatemala, Brazil and South Africa.

And figures from the International Pasta Organisation show Venezuela is the second largest consumer of pasta, after Italy. Tunisia, Chile and Peru also feature in the top 10, while Mexicans, Argentineans and Bolivians all eat more pasta than the British.

Global sales figures reflect the world's love affair with pasta - they have risen from US$13bn (£8bn) in 2003 to US$16bn (£10bn) in 2010. The analysts at Datamonitor predict it will hit US$19bn (£12bn) by 2015, despite rising wheat costs.

Just in the UK, retail sales of dry and fresh pasta amounted to £53m in 1987. In 2009, the figure was £282m - include pasta-based ready meals and the value rises to £800m, says consumer research experts Mintel.

So how did pasta become so popular? It's because it is cheap, versatile and convenient, says Jim Winship, from the UK-based Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Association. A sauce to go with it can be made from simple ingredients.

"You can create lots of different dishes with it. It tastes good and it's filling. It also has a long shelf life, so you can keep it in the larder until you need to put a meal together."

But that's only part of its success. Pasta is also relatively easy to mass produce and transport around the world, making it a popular product with food companies as well.

"It's always been an industrial product," says John Dickie, professor in Italian Studies at University College London and author of Delizia! A History of the Italians and their Food.

Tim Lang, professor of food policy at City University London, says technological advances in the 19th Century allowed pasta to be produced on a big scale. But the Industrial Revolution did that for everything else, he adds, and the reason pasta had been particularly successful was because people liked it and the Italian way of life.

"It's a cultural phenomenon, not an industrial phenomenon," he says. "People like the Italian way of life and their simple, staple foods."

Pasta has always had a global aspect as its origins are not purely Italian, which is unsurprising considering it can be made with just wheat and water.

The Greeks and Romans had pasta-like foods but they tended to be baked, not boiled. Ancient China had dumplings, but it's a myth that the Venetian explorer Marco Polo returned from China with pasta in 1295.

The most accepted theory is that the Arab invasions of the 8th Century brought a dried noodle-like product to Sicily. This early pasta was made using flour from durum wheat, which Sicily specialised in. Under Italian law, dry pasta - or pasta secca - can only be made from this type of wheat, and the vast bulk of pasta is still made in Italy.

And despite being considered a cheap meal now it was the preserve of the rich in the very beginning, says Prof Dickie.

"We tend to think of pasta like potatoes but it has never been viewed as a bland staple. It's been associated with prestige - people used to buy votes with pasta."

'Overrated gloppy stuff'

The first reference to pasta in Italy was noted in 1154 and it was about an export factory in Sicily, he says.

He says its breakthrough as a common food came in Naples in the 1700s, when it was recognised as "a good way to feed a large part of the populace".

But pasta popularity outside of Italy really took off at the turn of the 20th Century with large-scale Italian immigration to the New World. This is when it started to become known as Italy's national dish, he says.

Italian restaurateur Antonio Carluccio said pasta may have a long history, but the Italians made it their own by eating it with tomatoes.

He says most pasta is spaghetti outside of Italy but there are actually 600 different types and shapes and each region cooks it differently. He says its appeal is in the taste and its nutritional value.

"It is pleasurable with a good sauce, but it should just be coated, otherwise you lose the taste of the pasta. It is a complex carbohydrate which releases all the goodness slowly and you feel satisfied for a long time.

"I don't know one person who doesn't like pasta. It is very similar to bread - both are made with flour and water and they both need an accompaniment."

He's clearly not met food critic and broadcaster Giles Coren, who described pasta as "overrated gloppy stuff" that appeals only to children.

"Ask a footballer what they can cook and they always say spaghetti. It is what you reach for when there is nothing else left in the larder. It's poor people's food and it's unsophisticated. It's the same as bread - you just boil it instead of putting it in the oven."

So as popular as it is, pasta hasn't conquered everyone in the world.

Sterilisation: North Carolina grapples with legacy

More than 60,000 Americans were sterilised, many against their will, as part of a eugenics movement that finished in 1979, aimed at keeping the poor and mentally ill from having children. Now, decades on, one state is considering compensation.

In 1968, Elaine Riddick was raped by a neighbour who threatened to kill her if she told what happened.

She was 13, the daughter of violent and abusive parents in the desperately poor country town of Winfall, in the US state of North Carolina.

While she was in hospital giving birth, the state violated her a second time, she says.

A social worker who had deemed her "feeble-minded" petitioned the state Eugenics Board to have her sterilised.

Officials coerced her illiterate grandmother into signing an "x" on an authorisation form. After performing a Caesarean section, doctors sterilised her "just like cutting a hog", she says.

"They killed my kids," Ms Riddick says. "They killed mine before they got to me. They stopped it."

Sterilisation in the UK and Europe

While eugenics is now recognised as a pseudoscience - and after the Nazis, one with murderous consequences - it was once a respectable branch of the social sciences.

The term 'eugenics', meaning "good birth", was coined in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton, an English scientist who pushed the University College London to found a department to study the field.

Sir Winston Churchill once called for forced sterilisation of "the feeble-minded and insane classes".

While eugenic sterilisation never became official policy in the UK - in part due to opposition from the Catholic church - Finland, Norway, and Sweden adopted the sterilisation laws in the 1930s.

Between 1933 and 1945, more than 400,000 Germans were sterilised under Nazi "racial hygiene" laws, according to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Nearly four decades after the last person was sterilised under North Carolina's eugenics programme, a state task force is seeking the 2,900 victims of sterilisation officials estimate are still alive.

The group hopes to gather their stories and ultimately to recommend the state award them restitution. But with public coffers under severe pressure amid a flagging recovery, it is not clear the legislature will agree.

"I know I can't make it right but at least I can address it," said North Carolina state legislator Larry Womble. He hopes "to let the world know what a horrendous thing the government has perpetrated on these young boys and girls".

America's sterilisation movement was part of a broad effort to cleanse the country's population of characteristics and social groups deemed unwanted, an effort that included anti-race mixing and strict immigration quotas aimed at Eastern Europeans, Jews and Italians.

Beginning with Indiana in 1907, 32 states eventually passed laws allowing authorities to order the sterilisation of people deemed unfit to breed. The last programme ended in 1979.

The victims were criminals and juvenile delinquents, women deemed sexual deviants, homosexual men, poor people on welfare, people who were mentally ill or suffered from epilepsy. African Americans and Hispanic Americans were disproportionately targeted in some states.

'Coerced'

"In general it was the dispossessed of society," said Paul Lombardo, a historian and legal scholar at Georgia State University and editor of A Century of Eugenics in America.

The laws were plainly coercive, scholars say, though some incorporated a veneer of consent - illiterate farmhands given forms to sign, institutional inmates told they would not be released with their bodies intact, poor parents told they would be denied public assistance if they did not approve the removal of a wayward daughter's fallopian tubes.

Motivating the laws, Prof Lombardo said, was indignation at the thought that people who had violated sexual mores would subsequently end up needing public assistance.

"We have in this country have always been extremely sensitive to notions of public stories of inappropriate sexuality," he said.

"We exercise that most dramatically when it comes to times in which we think we're spending individual tax money to support people who violate those social norms. It's our puritanical background, running up against our sense of individualism."

Supreme Court approval

The racial context was inescapable as well.

"The fewer black babies we have the better, that's what some people said," Prof Lombardo said. "'They're just going to end up on welfare.'"

Also implicated in American sterilisation laws was the classical eugenic notion that as with horses, authorities could use genetic principles to improve society through selective breeding.

In a 1927 US Supreme Court decision that upheld the laws, storied jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote: "It is better for all the world if, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind."

All told, scholars estimate more than 60,000 Americans were sterilised under eugenics laws in the 20th Century.

North Carolina's law stood out for the wide net it cast.

Telling their stories

Most states would only order sterilisation of institutional inmates or patients, North Carolina's allowed for people within the community - typically social workers - to petition the state to have someone sterilised.

Of the 1,110 men and 6,418 women sterilised in North Carolina between 1929 and 1974, state health officials estimate about 2,900 could still be alive.

In the decade years several states have re-examined their forgotten legacies - prodded in some cases by newspaper investigations - and extended officially apologies.

North Carolina did so in 2003, but Mr Womble has continued to push for monetary compensation to the victims.

This month, a state task force created by his legislation will hold a public session at which with surviving victims are expected to tell their stories.

The group will eventually make a recommendation for compensation to the governor - $20,000 per person has been suggested.

But the state is facing a $2.5bn (£1.5bn) budget shortfall. The conservative Republicans in control of the state legislature are already poised to slash transport, healthcare and education funds, so it seems unlikely lawmakers will authorise as much as $58m in reparations.

Among those expected to testify is Ms Riddick, who now lives in Atlanta. She describes the prospect of a $20,000 payment as an insult.

"I am very angry," she says. "God said be fruitful and multiply. They did not only sin against me, they sinned against God."

Commentary

This is why social Darwinism is just pure evil.

To deny someone the right to life, to have kids and breed, but to just be human, because of traits you deem lacking, is absurd.

Had the shoes been on the other foot, maybe you would have been the one deemed lacking.

Eugenics was and is a policy of genocide for political purposes, as well as for personal gain. If people philosophically or even scientifically delve into the amazement that is life, they would never try to snuff it out.

Philosophers did not choose this murderous process that killed millions of people around the globe.

It was MILITARY LEADERS like hitler, Politicians, and the most unjust people on this earth that planned to do one simple thing, to take away the future of someone because they thought they had the right to control Life and Death.

This legacy of social Darwinism has left a stain on the 20th century that will never be wiped clean and it has affected every social class and every racial class.

Welcome to the Beginning of the End of the PC Era

Tech pundits have a bizarre habit of declaring products dead long before they're actually goners. (Here, for instance, is an article that says Facebook is toast — from 2008.) Me, I do my darndest to resist the temptation to play premature coroner. I will say this, though: if the PC does end up mortally wounded someday, we may look back at early June of 2011 as the moment when its death warrant was signed.

In the past eight days, Microsoft and Apple have shown off upcoming versions of their operating systems. Their plans differ in fundamental respects, but both companies are looking past the PC era we've lived in for the past three decades. They're building software for an age in which people do their computing and communicating on all kinds of gadgets — ones that are simpler, more portable and more Internet-centric than PCs as we've known them. (See a consumer wish list for Windows 8.)

First, the Microsoft news. At the Wall Street Journal's D9 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., last week, Windows honcho Steven Sinofsky presided over the first public demo of Windows 7's successor, which for now is going by the sensible code name Windows 8. (Microsoft posted a similar preview as an online video.)

The demo showed only one aspect of Windows 8, but it was a lulu. Windows is getting its most dramatic makeover since at least Windows 95, with an all-new interface that looks a lot more like Windows Phone 7 rather than anything that currently runs on a desktop PC or laptop. It's clever, colorful and designed to be navigated with fingers rather than a keyboard and mouse, showing plenty of iPhone/iPad influence without being a mere knockoff.

The old-school Windows interface isn't gone; existing software will still run. But Microsoft is prepping for a transition similar to the migration from DOS to Windows that happened a couple of decades ago. It may take a while to complete, but it's under way.

Coming to any definitive conclusions about Windows 8 on the basis of last week's demos would be like reviewing a movie on the basis of a teaser trailer that came out a year and a half before the film. (Microsoft isn't saying when the software will ship, but mid- to late 2012 is a good bet.) The sneak peek was enough to leave me asking a lot of questions, though:

Will Windows 8's dual interface feel like the best of both worlds rather than a disjointed mess? Making it make sense will be a massive challenge. (I'm keeping an open mind until I get some hands-on time.)

What sort of computers will run it best? I suspect that Microsoft has iPad-style tablets and all-in-one PCs akin to HP's TouchSmarts in mind. But Windows 8 will also need to run well on hundreds of millions of garden-variety computers. (Watch TIME's video "Windows Phone 7 Tips and Tricks.")

How will software evolve to reflect the new interface? Popular apps such as e-mail and spreadsheets will need more than a minor rethinking to go touch-only. And without a critical mass of software tailored to take advantage of Windows 8's new features, there will be no reason to make the upgrade.

Windows users are such a conservative bunch that 10-year-old Windows XP remains the world's favorite operating system. Will they be willing to take a giant step into the post-PC age? We'll see!

That Microsoft didn't share any details on these and other major issues doesn't mean it doesn't have coherent answers. It might just be waiting to spill the beans until September, when it will release more information about Windows 8 — and probably a preview version — at a developer conference called Build.

As for Apple, Steve Jobs and friends spent a couple of densely packed hours on the morning of June 6 at its WWDC conference in San Francisco walking through the next versions of OS X (the operating system used by Macs) and iOS (the one that powers the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad), as well as a new Internet service called iCloud. Scarcity of information wasn't a problem: if anything, the company unloaded so much new stuff that figuring it all out is going to take a while. (OS X 10.7 Lion is scheduled to arrive in July; iOS 5 and most of iCloud are due "this fall.")

The part of the Appleverse that's changing the least is the one most directly comparable to Windows: OS X. Its WWDC preview was mostly a recap of an event Apple held last October and focused on tweaks that make the operating system feel a bit more like its glamorous young cousin, iOS, without scrapping the existing interface. (Apple says it has no plans to make touchscreen Macs.) Lion will make better use of Apple's oversize touchpads, letting you supplement keyboard input with gestures to perform tasks like bopping between programs. It will get Launchpad, an optional home for your apps that mimics the iPhone and iPad home screens. And the Mac App Store that opened for business in January will be built right into the operating system.

Lion mostly looks like an appealing traditional software upgrade, not a departure — and a deal at just $29 for a copy that can be installed on all the Macs associated with one Apple ID. For the first time, Apple is distributing an OS X upgrade as a download through its Mac App Store; no DVD will be required (or even available).

iOS, on the other hand, is going to change in ways that may shift the tectonic plates of the computing world at least a teensy bit. For one thing, it's gaining autonomy. For the first time, you'll be able to use an iPhone or iPad without ever connecting it to a Mac or Windows PC with an archaic old USB cable — or, for that matter, owning a Mac or Windows PC at all. It's also getting a bunch of meaty new features, such as a revised notification system, a more desktop-like Safari browser and the ability to search the contents of all your e-mail.

Just as Microsoft probably won't use the term "post-PC" when describing Windows 8, Apple isn't going to describe iOS 5 as a PC operating system. In a real sense, however, that's what it's trying to be: a software platform so comprehensive and self-contained that it won't have to play second fiddle to anything else. Nobody reading this article is going to scrap his or her PC for an iPad-style tablet in the near future, but the day is going to arrive when that won't be a wacky notion — and this upgrade will help Apple get there.

And then there's iCloud. I said earlier that it's an Internet service, but that's oversimplifying matters. It's really a suite of services for storing and shuttling information of all sorts among iPhones, iPod Touches, iPads, Macs or Windows PCs, including e-mail, calendars, contacts, documents, presentations, photos, music you bought from Apple, music you acquired elsewhere, apps and more. It'll replace the company's MobileMe service and act rather like an Internet-based version of iTunes. It's all very, very ambitious. Much of iCloud will be free, but you'll pay for some options, like cloud-based storage space exceeding 5 GB — and, of course, for music and movies, paid apps and other content.

iCloud has the potential to evolve into a replacement for one of the PC's defining components: a local hard disk with vast amounts of data stored on it. I suspect Apple is already looking forward to the day when it can eliminate hard disks across the Mac line, much as the original iMac did away with the floppy drive back in the late 1990s.

But even if you're not the type to bristle at the notion of depositing massive amounts of your data on Apple servers in North Carolina, you may be cautious about assuming that an offering with so many moving parts will, in Jobs' oft-repeated words, "just work." Jobs admitted as much at WWDC when he brought up the less ambitious, occasionally erratic MobileMe and didn't deny its shortcomings. The only way to render a meaningful verdict on iCloud is to wait until it's available, use it, and see if it does, indeed, just work.

Microsoft's Windows 8 news — so far — is about one overwhelming change: the new interface. Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud are about a jillion small ones that aren't a huge whoop on an individual basis. Most of them feel familiar, in fact: they already exist in third-party iOS apps or on competing platforms like Android. Apple's core competency isn't doing unprecedented things; it's doing existing things better than other companies, doing them itself on its own terms and stitching them together as seamlessly as possible. With its new software and services, it aims to do more of that seamless stitching than ever before.

Did I mention that Apple and Google aren't the only tech behemoths trying to figure out what comes after traditional PCs? Google is also in the game with upcoming Chromebooks based on its Chrome OS. They're basically minimalist laptops that run only a Web browser — and they provide a third distinct vision of the post-PC device.

Even with all this change in the air, preparing a eulogy for traditional PCs is silly: It's going to be many, many years before the last one is powered down for the final time. But while technologies rarely die, they frequently shuffle off into semiretirement to make way for new ways of doing things. We already knew that Apple and Google were eager to see classic PCs start to make way for upstart devices; now it's clear that Microsoft is also preparing itself for that eventuality. Commentary

This article is ridiculous in a number of ways.

1. First lets talk about the PC gaming sector of the market. Forget the fact that tablets currently lack any power or performance/ proper Hard Drive space, and forgetting the fact that it'll take at least a decade to get there, there is no way to play games properly on a tablet.

Unless the tablet has a mouse and keyboard input and has a big screen, most games can't be played with just touch screen. If a tablet has both of these inputs it's ESSENTIALLY a PC, just shrunken down.

2. Also how do you type a long essay at 50 words per minute on a tablet, without a keyboard?

Regardless of the technological differences right now, the main thing holding tablets back is the medium. Touch screen is very limited in functionality.

PC's can never die because the mouse and keyboard are irreplaceable.

Touch screens can not compete with it and as long as a mouse and keyboard connect to a screen, you basically have a PC.

PC's are here to stay for a few decades minimum. The only thing to possibly surpass them would be proper voice recognition and virtual reality.

Those are decades away. We haven't even gotten augmented reality setup yet.

A drug that makes hearts repair themselves has been used in research on mice.

The damage caused by a heart attack had previously been considered permanent.

But a study in the journal Nature showed the drug, thymosin beta 4, if used in advance of a heart attack, was able to "prime" the heart for repair.

The British Heart Foundation described repair as the "holy grail of heart research", but said any treatment in humans was years away.

Due to advances in health care the number of people dying from coronary heart disease is falling.

But those living with heart failure are on the rise - more than 750,000 people have the condition in the UK alone.

Professor Paul Riley, from the University College London, said: "The adult epicardial cells which line the muscle of the heart can be activated, move inward and give rise to new heart muscle."

"We saw an improvement in the ejection fraction, in the ability of the heart to pump out blood, of 25%."

As well as pumping more blood, the scar tissue was reduced and the walls of the heart became thicker.

Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said he was "very excited" about the research but warned the scale of improvement seen in animals was rarely seen in humans.

However, he argued that even a small improvement would have a dramatic impact on people's quality of life.

"A normal heart has lots of spare capacity. In patients with heart failure it is working flat out just to sit down [and] it's like running a marathon," he said.

"You could turn a patient from somebody who's gasping while sitting in a chair to somebody who can sit comfortably in a chair."

Advance therapy

The mice needed to take the drug in advance of a heart attack in order for it to be effective. As the researchers put it, "the priming effect is key".

If a similar drug could be found to be effective in humans, then the researchers believe it would need to be prescribed in a similar way to statins.

Professor Riley said "I could envisage a patient known to be at risk of a heart attack - either because of family history or warning signs spotted by their GP - taking an oral tablet, which would prime their heart so that if they had a heart attack the damage could be repaired."

He said this could be available in 10 years.

The British Heart Foundation, which funded the study, said repairing a damaged heart was the "holy grail" of heart research.

The results strengthened the evidence that drugs could be used to prevent the onset of heart failure, it said.

Pakistan's dreaded spy agency, the ISI, is back in the spotlight, accused of murdering journalist Saleem Shahzad. The agency's engagement with the media has become progressively more virulent as the "war on terror" has progressed. BBC Urdu editor Aamer Ahmed Khan asks whether anyone can bring the ISI under control.

ISI officials deny involvement in the murder of Saleem Shahzad. One said there is nothing sinister about their reported contacts with him. The agency, the official said, is mandated to remain in contact with journalists "for provision of accurate information on matters of national security".

But he would be hard pressed to find a Pakistani journalist willing to buy that - unless we agree that "sinister" is a matter of perspective.

I once received a phone call reminding me what a lovely family I had after I published a story for The Herald magazine on ISI-Taliban links. It had clearly upset someone at the ISI.

A panicked phone call home established all was well - and a few more calls to the relevant people from my powerful publisher ensured that the man who introduced himself as Col Tariq never called again.

But there was a catch - I had to go to the ISI's heavily fortified headquarters in Islamabad and meet the "internal security" people there. I could not shake off a creepy feeling that someone in the building had ordered that my family be monitored and watched.

Shot in the head

Spend an evening in any press club in the country and you are likely to walk away with stories that will sit comfortably in the pages of an underworld chronicle.

Tales of journalists who were made to write suicide notes for reporting on the suspected presence of India's most wanted man in Karachi. Accounts of correspondents who became hit-and-run victims after reporting on the agency's involvement in electoral malpractice.

I still remember the time when our tribal areas correspondent was picked up by the ISI and only released after being severely tortured for more than 36 hours.

Within the first few hours, we had made contact with every government official we knew, from the local police officer to the interior minister.

And it was only when they stopped answering our calls that we realised it must have been the work of bhai loag or "brothers", as ISI officials are commonly referred to.

In between, I received a call from a journalist I knew was in close contact with the ISI. He told me that a dead body fitting my correspondent's description had been taken to a hospital in the garrison city of Rawalpindi and that we had better check it out.

It took me 40 minutes to drive to the hospital, 40 of the most difficult minutes of my life as a journalist. When I saw the dead body, I could have hugged it.

I was so relieved that it wasn't my colleague. And when he was released the next evening, I found myself saying a silent thank you to his tormentors for letting him live.

Then there were the three bizarre days I spent in North Waziristan in July 2006 after a 30-year-old tribal journalist, Hayatullah, was killed.

He had been abducted from outside a local college, held for six months, then shot in the head and dumped by the roadside.

What struck me about that incident was that everyone in the area seemed to know the exact identity of his kidnappers.

Some even mentioned a name, supposedly an ISI major who, it was said, would often call Hayatullah's family and tell them that he had not yet made up his mind whether to release him or kill him.

ISI immunity

It is not without reason that Saleem Shahzad's death has immediately led to allegations against the ISI. The entire journalist community in Pakistan knows how closely the agency monitors media and journalists.

They also know how immensely powerful it is, the extent of the immunity it enjoys and the fact that journalists are only a small part of its overarching remit.

Nearly 200 political activists have been abducted, tortured and killed in the troubled province of Balochistan over the past two years merely for demanding their political rights.

Their families are almost unanimous in their opinion that the ISI is involved. Yet the killings continue unabated.

Even the Supreme Court has tried to intervene to recover some of those kidnapped - but to no avail. It has merely come to be known as the case of the missing people.

Former ISI officials proudly recount tales of how they engineered political alliances and brought down elected governments to "protect the national interest".

Yet after every general election, politicians from all political parties make a beeline for the ISI headquarters in the hope of securing a place in the cabinet.

The present government made a feeble attempt last year to bring the ISI under the control of the interior ministry.

But the agency reacted so sharply that the notification was withdrawn within hours. Since then, it has been business as usual.

In the aftermath of Bin Laden's killing, the current ISI chief, Gen Shuja Pasha, offered to resign after publicly admitting a complete intelligence failure. His offer was politely declined not just by the army chief but also by the entire parliament.

Still, there are some incorrigible optimists who believe that Saleem Shahzad's death can change all this. They point to the growing public criticism of the agency, fuelled by a steadily rising anger within a very dynamic media at its total lack of accountability.

One of Pakistan's most influential and respected publishers, Hameed Haroon, told the BBC that the situation had reached breaking point. "This has to end," he fumed. "They cannot treat our journalists, our intellectual assets like this."

The question is, who is going to end it?

It is widely known for causing outbreaks of infectious diarrhoea and is currently held responsible for a number of deaths - but some scientists say E. coli has given us the answer to life itself.

"It has given us an understanding of who we are," says Carl Zimmer, who has written a biography of the bacterium.

Even before the first hour of our lives is complete, the bacterium is present in our gut in many cases, crowding out more dangerous organisms.

It lives in most other warm-blooded animals and, for the most part, is harmless.

"But some members of the E. coli family have given the group a bad name," says Mr Zimmer.

Though the strain O104 is causing severe illness and deaths in the current outbreak, there are hundreds of types of E. coli which cause us no problems.

E coli was one of the first organisms to have its genetic code sequenced - deepening our understanding of how DNA works and ultimately increasing our knowledge of how humans function.

As French scientist Jacques Monod is reported to have said, "What is true for E. coli is true for the elephant."

Many of the genetic properties that govern E. coli hold true for ourselves.

'Micro factories'

Several forms of E. coli have been modified to work for the benefit of mankind. The bacteria are currently replicating in tens of thousands of scientific institutes across the world.

  • In the 1940s,scientists realised that E. coli could mate and exchange genes
  • They were also able to make a primitive map of where the bacterium's genes were located - one of the first genetic maps
  • In the 1960s, researchers discovered they could splice open a section of DNA inside E. coli, add new genes into the mix and allow the bacteria to replicate with this new combination of genes
  • E. coli modified in this way is the basis of many experiments worldwide
  • In research, it is engineered so that unnecessary, harmful aspects of it are removed
  • Most bacteria used in research are modified so that they do not survive in our guts

E. coli is used as a micro-factory: given the right instructions, it can be modified to rapidly produce hundreds of genes or specific proteins. It is the ideal workhorse: it is easy to grow, does not require much energy, or demand sophisticated living conditions.

Even more crucial to scientists, it can be modified easily and replicates rapidly.

One of the first successes the bacterium holds to its name is the production of human insulin.

In the 1970s, scientists inserted the genes responsible for coding human insulin into the bacteria and were able to produce vast quantities of the hormone to treat diabetes.

'Birth of biotechnology'

Before this, diabetics had to rely solely on insulin isolated from sources such as horse urine and pigs' pancreases.

With this discovery, the modern biotechnology industry was born.

E. coli has been used in the production of antibiotics, vaccines and many other therapies.

And it is still used in the research and development stages of most drugs, according to Dr Stephen Smith of Trinity College, Dublin.

Christopher Voigt, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has worked with E. coli to target cancer cells.

"You can think of these bacteria as being drug delivery vehicles," he said.

"We created a strain of E. coli that can specifically bond to a molecule that is present in most malignant cancer cells and is able to deliver a therapeutic agent to the specific cell."

This work is now being continued by researchers in Berkeley who are testing the procedure in mouse models.

'Green fuel'

Christopher Voigt says medical research using E. coli is moving to a new phase - away from antibiotics which kill bacteria to engineering bacteria that are able to interact with beneficial microbes already present within us.

And E. coli's appeal has widened - engineers and computer scientists are working on it too.

Professor James Liao of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and his team recently developed a way to produce normal butanol using the bacteria.

Some consider butanol to be a greener alternative to gasoline [petrol] and other widely used fuels.

"We were able to demonstrate that E. coli can produce butanol very efficiently," he said.

Their next step will be to increase the size of the process to see how the organisms behave in large tanks, to further test its commercial viability.

'Living Computers'

A number of scientists are trying to take advantage of the digital nature of DNA in E. coli, says Dr Karmella Haynes, of Harvard Medical School.

"It has a very strict genetic code - it is almost like hardware," Dr Haynes said.

Her team's research, published in 2008, used E. coli to help them solve a problem similar to classical mathematical puzzles.

Based on their design, as each E. coli bacterium worked as a micro-computer, certain bacteria were able to solve the problem at speed, Dr Haynes said.

E. coli's applications stretch even further - by inserting genes that produce light, it has been used to make primitive cameras.

'Sinister side'

"It is an incredibly accomplished microbe, both in and out of the lab," says Mr Zimmer, author of Microcosm: E. coli and the New Science of Life.

It is this versatile nature - its ability to survive in many environments, to pick up bits of genetic code from other sources and to replicate rapidly - that also lends it a more sinister side.

It is claimed to be most studied organism on our planet. Some scientists say we know more about it than we know about ourselves.

But as new forms of infectious E. coli emerge and claim lives, there are a number of crucial experiments that still need to be done.

The global war on drugs has "failed" according to a new report by group of politicians and former world leaders.

The Global Commission on Drug Policy report calls for the legalisation of some drugs and an end to the criminalisation of drug users.

The panel includes former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the former leaders of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil, and the entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

The White House rejected the findings, saying the report was misguided.

The 19-member commission includes the former US Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, the former President of Colombia Cesar Gaviria, and the current Prime Minister of Greece George Papandreou.

The panel also features prominent Latin American writers Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa, the EU's former foreign policy chief Javier Solana, and George Schultz, the former US Secretary of State.

'No harm to others'

Their report argues that anti-drug policy has failed by fuelling organised crime, costing taxpayers millions of dollars and causing thousands of deaths.

It cites UN estimates that opiate use increased 35% worldwide from 1998 to 2008, cocaine by 27%, and cannabis by 8.5%.

The authors criticise governments who claim the current war on drugs is effective:

"Political leaders and public figures should have the courage to articulate publicly what many of them acknowledge privately: that the evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that repressive strategies will not solve the drug problem, and that the war on drugs has not, and cannot, be won," the report said.

Analysis

It is a damning indictment. The group of world leaders, including former Presidents of Mexico and Colombia which are blighted by the trade in illegal drugs, says urgent changes are overdue.

Their report says current policies to tackle drug abuse and the crime that preys on it are clearly not working, but result in thousands of deaths and rampant lawlessness.

It calls for an end to the 'criminalisation, marginalisation and stigmatisation of people who use drugs but who do no harm to others'.

The leading international figures behind the report do not pull their punches. They say sensible regulation of drugs is working in some countries but they accuse many governments around the world of pretending that the current war on drugs is effective when they know it isn't.

Drugs need to be decriminalised, they say, and addicts need to be treated as patients, not villains.

Instead of punishing users who the report says "do no harm to others," the commission argues that governments should end criminalisation of drug use, experiment with legal models that would undermine organised crime syndicates and offer health and treatment services for drug-users.

It calls for drug policies based on methods empirically proven to reduce crime and promote economic and social development.

The commission is especially critical of the US, saying it must abandon anti-crime approaches to drug policy and adopt strategies rooted in healthcare and human rights.

"We hope this country (the US) at least starts to think there are alternatives," said the former Colombian President Cesar Gaviria.

"We don't see the US evolving in a way that is compatible with our (countries') long-term interests."

The office of White House drug tsar Gil Kerlikowske rejected the panel's recommendations.

"Drug addiction is a disease that can be successfully prevented and treated," said a spokesman for the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

"Making drugs more available - as this report suggests - will make it harder to keep our communities healthy and safe."

A group of more than 200 Japanese pensioners are volunteering to tackle the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power station.

The Skilled Veterans Corps, as they call themselves, is made up of retired engineers and other professionals, all over the age of 60.

They say they should be facing the dangers of radiation, not the young.

It was while watching the television news that Yasuteru Yamada decided it was time for his generation to stand up.

No longer could he be just an observer of the struggle to stabilise the Fukushima nuclear plant.

The retired engineer is reporting back for duty at the age of 72, and he is organising a team of pensioners to go with him.

For weeks now Mr Yamada has been getting back in touch with old friends, sending out e-mails and even messages on Twitter.

Volunteering to take the place of younger workers at the power station is not brave, Mr Yamada says, but logical.

"I am 72 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live," he says.

"Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer."

Mr Yamada is lobbying the government hard for his volunteers to be allowed into the power station. The government has expressed gratitude for the offer but is cautious.

Certainly a couple of MPs are supporting Mr Yamada.

"At this moment I can say that I am talking with many key government and Tepco people. But I am sorry I can't say any more at this moment. It is on the way but it is a very, very sensitive issue politically," he said.

Certainly it is likely more workers will be needed.

The plant is still spewing radiation, nearly three months after an earthquake and tsunami knocked out its cooling systems, triggering explosions.

Its operator, Tepco, has now confirmed three of the reactors probably suffered meltdowns.

The plan is to bring the plant to a cold shutdown by January, although some experts believe that is over optimistic.

To cope with the disaster Japan has raised the radiation exposure limit for emergency workers from 100 millisieverts to 250 millisieverts.

But Tepco announced this week two workers at Fukushima might have already been exposed to more.

Kamikaze?

Many of Mr Yamada's veterans are retired engineers like him.

Others are former power station workers, experts in factory design - and even a singer and two cooks - Mr Yamada says they will be useful to keep his team amused and fed.

Michio Ito used to be a primary school teacher but is spending his retirement helping out in a cafe that offers work experience to people with learning difficulties.

He is keen to swap his apron for a radiation suit.

"I don't think I'm particularly special," he says. "Most Japanese have this feeling in their heart. The question is whether you step forward, or you stay behind and watch.

"To take that step you need a lot of guts, but I hope it will be a great experience. Most Japanese want to help out any way they can."

Mr Yamada has already tried on his old overalls for size.

He says he is as fit as ever - with a lifetime of experience to bring to the task.

And he laughs off suggestions his proposed team is comparable to the kamikaze pilots who flew suicide missions in World War II.

"We are not kamikaze. The kamikaze were something strange, no risk management there. They were going to die. But we are going to come back. We have to work but never die."

Germany's ruling coalition says it has agreed a date of 2022 for the shutdown of all of its nuclear power plants.

Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen made the announcement after a meeting of the ruling coalition that lasted into the early hours of Monday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel had set up an ethics panel to look into nuclear power following the disaster at the Fukushima plant in Japan.

Germany saw mass anti-nuclear protests in the wake of the disaster.

'Sustainable energy'

Mr Rottgen said the seven oldest reactors, which were already subject to a moratorium, and the Kruemmel nuclear power plant, would not resume.

Six others would go offline by 2021 at the latest and the three newest by 2022, he said.

Mr Rottgen said: "It's definite. The latest end for the last three nuclear power plants is 2022. There will be no clause for revision."

Mrs Merkel's Christian Democrats had met with its junior partners on Sunday after the ethics panel had delivered its conclusions.

Before the meeting she said: "I think we're on a good path but very, very many questions have to be considered.

"If you want to exit something, you also have to prove how the change will work and how we can enter into a durable and sustainable energy provision."

The Fukushima plant was crippled by the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, causing radioactive leaks that spurred anti-nuclear protests in Germany.

Mr Rottgen said a tax on spent fuel rods, expected to raise 2.3bn euros ($3.28bn) a year from this year, would remain despite the shutdown.

Germany's nuclear industry has argued that an early shutdown would be hugely damaging to the country's industrial base.

Before March's moratorium on the older power plants, Germany relied on nuclear power for 23% of its energy.

The anti-nuclear drive boosted Germany's Green party, which took control of the Christian Democrat stronghold of Baden-Wuerttemberg, in late March.

Commentary

I used to be for Nuclear and even wrote 2 essays in High school supporting the idea wholeheartedly.

But in College I was challenged to research an essay very thoroughly and this strict discipline and essay that came about, using numerous referenced resources and not biased books, painted a different picture of Nuclear Power all together.

Here are the key points:

1) There is no option for Nuclear waste removal. Even storing it under ground is politically savage since no city will take it in and it costs millions to maintain.

This is also a Finite area and when full, another storage area needs to be made starting the whole political dance and folly all over again.

In America, not a single storage facility has yet to be made, even the Yucca mountain option is yet to be accepted and for good reason.

2) Nuclear Power plants are not safe. Even if you say you could make the most amazing plant in the world that would never break down on it's own, a terrorist needs only smuggle a bit of explosives to ruin the lives of the Eastern or Western United States. (Yes, the whole east or west)

But again, the first point is moot. There is no safe Nuclear reactor as has been shown in Fukishima. There are no full proof plans. There is no plant secure from Nature's wrath.

But beyond that, no plant is safe from the wrath of Humans. It would take only 1 plant and 1 group of people to destroy the lives of 100,000,000 people for the next 1,000 years.

These plants are not safe.

3) The other options are cheaper, more available, and more enticing. Since the technology boom of the 90's and 00's, we've seen hardware and manufacturing prices get slashed. This packed with investment in renewable energy has created a new market infrastructure that is making Nuclear seem less and less enticing.

Governments have also backed renewable energy products and are slowly working on the small and large scale to find a new way to power our homes.

From Dye sensitized solar cells to power small objects, to large turbines and wave currents powering large cities, and solar paneling in between, we now have a wide array of choices that are getting cheaper year by year.

4) Cost. Cost is the main reason why Nuclear Energy frankly sucks. The cost to build a reactor, EVEN with government subsidies, is ridiculous and on the order of BILLIONS of dollars. No other option out there requires such a hefty investment.

The only reason we have power plants now is with the sheer force of the government, not the hand of the invisible market.

After what happened in Fukishima, investors are done with Nuclear. They have cleaned their hands of it. It's completely going off their balance sheets.

So frankly, the one and only reason you need to not go Nuclear is COST. It's too expensive.

It's too expensive for the environment, for investors, for our children, and frankly for the good ole Green Back dollar bill.

Nuclear power is dead in its tracks. Anyone daring to take its hand now needs to understand that they will be lead off a cliff.
